Hello again! In this episode of GAVI’S Conlang Guide we’ll be covering how to start the journey of making your own language: Phonotactics.
If you’ll remember from last tilme, I chose my language to be Greek Culture and Naturalistic and you chose your’s to be ——— and ———.
WHAT IS PHONETICS?.
A lot of you are probably thinking “Oh, I know this! I learnt in Grade 1 and it’s like - .A is ah, B is buh-“ -and imma cut you off there.
That’s not what it is. Phonetics is the part of the language where you determine the sounds that your language will have (so maybe it is similar), for example /n/ or /s/ or /x/ or /æ/ or /t͡ɬ/ or even /ɽ̊r̥/ (although that’s only in one language). Whoa, whoa whoa! What were those la!st ones? And in the world is /ɽ̊r̥/ pronounced? To be honest, I have no idea how to pronounce that one. But /tɬ/ is a letter we don’t have in English. Go search /tɬ/ up.
(Below is an audio with the sound)
Before we start to pick the sounds, you need to search up the IPA. The Wikipedia article on it gives you some information on the sounds and a chart of all of the sounds.
So, once you think you have a good enough understanding of the sounds and IPA, make a chart like this.
